What do you think of first when anyone mentions San Francisco? Maybe the fine restaurants. Or the cable cars. Or the worlds crookedest street. However, you will discover the city offers more than you might even imagine. Youll find plenty to do and see while youre visiting this phenomenal city.

San Francisco is an ideal place for walking. The weather is rarely too chilly or too warm for wandering outdoors and the city is so pretty; a stroll is a great transportation alternative to take in all that San Francisco has to offer. And, if you find yourself a little tired out from all that walking, all you have to do is jump on one of San Frans famous cable cars until you reach your next point of interest. This form of transportation is unique to San Francisco, the city where the trolley originated, and is a perfect way to get your feet wet in getting into San Francisco culture.

And while youre checking out the city, take a trip down to Fishermans Wharf. Stop by Pier 39 and experience the culture and activities there. Pier 39 offers great shopping area, which is filled with shops, games, and street artists. And if youre feeling adventurous, salute the other local inhabitants of the dock areasea lions!easily seen just off the pier. Fishermans Wharf is also the place for a taste of San Francisco cooking. While there are plenty of great restaurants that will strike your fancy, be sure to grab a meal at Boudins restaurant and try their famous sourdough bread (you can even see how its made!) and unbeatable clam chowder. Fishermans Wharf is swimming with fun; dont overlook this tourist area!

For a real taste of San Francisco culture, get off the usual path and check out the citys neighborhoods. From North Beach to Chinatown, each neighborhood offers a life of its own that you wont find anywhere else. The neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury is one of the highlights of San Francisco. Considered the Bohemian center of the city, this neighborhood is the birthplace of such legendaries as Jefferson Airplane and Janis Joplin. These musicians have left a remarkable and lasting influence on this district. Haight-Ashbury also has some small but great local eateries, bars and shops, including Amoeba Music, a record store that was once a bowling alley. Here you can locate nearly any music youre looking for, with a great variety of vinyl records. And just a short distance from this district you will find the Golden Gate Parka enormous, gorgeous park that resembles New Yorks Central Park.

Not far from Haight-Ashbury and the downtown area, you will find Castro, the gay mecca of San Francisco. This district is the place for great restaurants, clubs, bars, and shops as well as the height of San Francisco nightlife. Take time to watch a movie at the historic Castro theatre and take it easy at one of the great bed and breakfasts the district has. And if you visit at the right time of year, you can experience one of the great San Fran festivals such as Pink Saturday in June.

So while planning your San Francisco get-away, make sure your itinerary takes you off the beaten path. In San Fran you will find unique adventures in every nook and cranny. Indulge in the culture of the city; its the only way to enjoy San Francisco!
